Welcome to the Imaginative Realm of Benjamin Moss
"Creative expression functions as a bridge into the inner domain.  Through Music, Painting, movement and other forms, The invisible begins to take shape."

It is my experience that there is an infinite capacity within the inner realms of ourselves that is both a great mystery and also a boundless adventure.  Within the field of imagination, entire worlds arise, dissolve and reform in continuous motion.   These inner landscapes are not only mere abstractions or fantasies, they possess a vivid and experiential reality that can be equal and at times exceed the vividness of the external world we perceive.  Most notably through dreams, or the participation in entheogenic practice.  They assimilate the living architecture of a vast, self-organizing web of life with its branches, leaves, flowers and seeds of a greater Essense that witnesses all phenomena and holds the totality of experience within itself.

Creative expression functions as a bridge into this domain.  Through music, painting, movement and other forms, the invisible begins to take shape. These practices do not merely represent inner experience they translate and transmit it.   They allow something pre-verbal and often ineffable to emerge into shared space.  For me, painting serves as the primary interpretation.  Through it, subtle impressions, emotional states and visionary fragments are brought into form.  The act of painting becomes a dialogue between perception and material, where inner imagery is refined, clarified and shared.

Artist Statement

.

My encounter with visionary, surreal and imaginative art marked a decisive turning point.  I recognized forms and patterns that reflected inner truths I had long perceived but could not articulate.  This recognition carried a sense of familiarity, as if encountering a shared symbolic vocabulary that exists beneath individual experience.  It suggested that these images do not originate solely from the personal mind, but emerge from a deeper and more universal field.

To paint then, is to participate in this unfolding Dance.  It is an act of mythopoesis and discovery at once.  Each work becomes a site where perception expands and reorganizes itself.  The canvas functions as both surface and portal, an interface between inner and outer worlds.

Ultimately, my work seeks to illuminate that sense of interconnectedness.  It points toward the idea that the vastness we attribute to the cosmos is mirrored within the mind itself.  By engaging with these images, one is not simply observing an artwork, but entering a space of recognition.  The intention is not to provide answers, but to open a field of experience.  one that encourages reflection, curiosity and an expanded awareness of the infinite capacity that exist within one's own inner world.

Bio

Benjamin Moss is a visionary and imaginative realism painter whose work emerges from a deeply personal journey through addiction, philosophical inquiry and spiritual transformation.  Raised in a strict Catholic environment in North Dakota, his early understanding of spirituality was shaped by rigid doctrine and fear-based narratives.  His later academic exploration of philosophy dismantled these inherited beliefs, leading him into a period of nihilism and existential crisis that ultimately manifested in struggles with addiction and self-destructive behavior.  This behavior has been a mystery to him however as it didn't stem from any trauma as his parents, Don and Zita, who are still married to this day, were always very loving and supportive.  A formative childhood loss, the tragic murder of a closest cousin by her boyfriend left a lasting emotional imprint, deepening his sensitivity to the fragility of life.  Growing up immersed in fantasy worlds alongside his brothers, playing Dungeons & Dragons and reading Lord of the Rings, Moss developed an early connection to mythic imagination that continues to influence his work.  The middle child of two other siblings, Benjamin found himself becoming independent, rebellious and adaptable.

Benjamin's college life was turbulent as his inner world of faith crumbled before the age of reason and critical thinking.  Upon heading down into a spiral of depression and alcohol he left college and relocated to California to pursue a life outside the bible-belt of the midwest.  There something unexpected happened he did not expect.  He discovered psychedelics and festival culture which spawned in him a renewed enthusiasm for spiritual inquiry and possibility.  His first experiences of entheogenic plants and substances catapulted him into meta-physical inquiry.  Moss began to explore all schools of spiritual nature from buddhist meditation to new age manifestation.  He took this spiritual quest with him as he travelled the world through Central and South America, Australia and South East Asia.  He sat in meditation with the monks of Thailand and circled in ceremonies with the shamans of Peru.

Upon returning to California he slipped into a few heart-breaking relationships which spun him out into a decade navigating substance abuse with the controversial drug GHB.  At first his use was mild in the form of a social lubricant or an exercise stimulant.  But as his trials and tribulations progressed it spun out of control into a full blown emotional and physical dependancy.  His life was spiraling downward fast in which both prison or death hung on the pendulum of fate.  Unable to pull himself from the echoing cycles of addiction he sought out one of the most powerful entheogenic plants in the world, Iboga, an experience that marked a profound turning point in his recovery. This transformative moment reoriented his relationship to his true self and own childhood dream of artistic purpose, laying the foundation for his current body of work.  He has now been sober from that addiction for over two years now.

With more than twenty years of painting experience, Moss now works primarily with the airbrush, sculpting with its capacity for subtle gradation and luminosity to create immersive compositions within the genre of Imaginative Realism. His paintings explore inner psychological and spiritual landscapes, often centered on themes of  transformation, empathy and the transmutation of suffering into growth. Drawing on fantasy & archetypal forms rooted in Celtic and Germanic folklore such as druidic mythology, fae, elves and dragons, his work bridges mythic symbolism with deeply human emotional states.

My Vision

My work exists at an existential threshold of creation. Through a mythopoetic narrative and trans-personal outlook my dream and practice is about connection.  Beneath the apparent separateness of individuals lies a shared field of experience. Emotion becomes a bridge.  My aim to is to evoke a recognition that we are participating in the same underlying reality spiritually, psychologically and physically intertwined. The narratives within my work are not isolated stories, but reflections of a collective human condition.

A central focus of my work is the restoration of balance through the re-emergence of the sacred power of women and nature.  I seek to honor and portray real women from across the world, particularly those who have endured oppression shaped by systems of power, religion and cultural misogyny.  Through their representation, I aim to reveal resilience, depth and an inherent sacredness that has too often been diminished or silenced.  My vision is the forging of the incredible beauty that is the mythos of the feminine and the harmony of all beings.

My work extends beyond the canvas into action. A portion of all profits made by my art is dedicated to supporting organizations that protect natural habitats, preserve wildlife and advocate for women's rights. The same interconnectedness explored within the paintings is carried into the world, where art participates in tangible restoration.

Ultimately, my practice is a discipline giving rise the unheard emotional ocean of humanity.  The trials and tribulations of all beings made a little more meaningful by elaborating them artistically and capture that essense.  An offering of beauty and meaning and an invitation to remember the deeper unity that binds all life.
